ABSTRACT
This study examines how Physical Education (PE) contributes to students’ holistic development in the Age of Digital Panoptic—a context defined by pervasive digital connectivity, excessive screen engagement, and sedentary lifestyles that threaten student wellness. Digital Panoptic refers to an era of constant digital exposure, ubiquitous screen use, and reduced offline physical interaction, which has become a dominant societal context for adolescent development. This paper evaluates PE as a core countermeasure to enhance students’ physical, mental, social, and academic well-being. Adopting an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design (quantitative phase followed by qualitative phase), the study included 400 students (aged 12–18) from 10 public schools in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, as well as 15 PE teachers and 10 school administrators. Descriptive statistics summarized demographic data and PE participation patterns. Findings show that PE significantly reduces sedentary behaviour, improves concentration and emotional regulation, and correlates with better academic performance; sports like basketball also foster teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Barriers to PE implementation (e.g., limited infrastructure, insufficient teacher training) were also identified. These findings confirm that PE is indispensable for equipping students with essential skills and habits in a digital world, emphasizing the need to reposition PE as a core basic education discipline. Practically, the study recommends targeted investment in PE infrastructure and educator training in Guangzhou’s public schools, alongside inclusive PE programs, to ensure equitable student well-being and holistic development.
